Anyone who has lived in Chicago for any period of time has been inside a two flat. Like a bungalow, they are typically built with a single interior supporting wall down the middle making for a bit of a “bowling alley” effect. Typically, bedrooms on one side and public space on the other. In this Oak Park conversion, we removed the wall and added a beam in the back of the space to open up room for a modern kitchen, and co-opted the former kitchen into a super functional mudroom and first floor laundry. We also opened up the front stairwell to join the two floors, built a custom newel to match the existing, and added a set of stairs to the basement.
